The citizen-soldiers who fought for the Confederacy personified the best qualities of America. The preservation of liberty and freedom was the motivating factor in the South's decision to fight the Second American Revolution. The tenacity with which Confederate soldiers fought underscored their belief in the rights guaranteed by the Constitution. These attributes are the underpinning of our democratic society and represent the foundation on which this nation was built.

Today, the Sons of Confederate Veterans is preserving the history and legacy of these heroes, so future generations can understand the motives that animated the Southern Cause.

About the Sons of Confederate Veterans

The SCV is the direct heir of the United Confederate Veterans, and the oldest hereditary organization for male descendants of Confederate soldiers. Organized at Richmond, Virginia in 1896, the SCV continues to serve as a historical, patriotic, and non-political organization dedicated to insuring that a true history of the 1861-1865 period is preserved.

Membership in the Sons of Confederate Veterans is open to all male descendants of any veteran who served honorably in the Confederate armed forces. White Oak Civil War Museum

This historic travel presentation of OHP has been requested for a long time now. Every time we bring up The White Oak Civil War Museum on the Relic Roundup it is always: “You got to go!”, “It’s unbelievable!”, or a number of other comments but always ending with an exclamation mark. Our guest is D.P. Newton.

Description from : http://www.virginia.org/site/description.asp?attrid=11405

White Oak Museum houses an extensive collection of Civil War artifacts, representing both Union and Confederate troops. Most items were discarded or lost by troops camping or fighting in the Stafford County and Fredericksburg areas. Displays will amaze the novice as well as the serious Civil War Buff - including replicas of soldier huts that were used as temporary housing during the winter months. Many Civil War soldiers died of wounds and disease. To give proper remembrance to these brave soldiers, White Oak Museum exhibits both military and personal items to honor the soliders, from private to general, who suffered both in battle and behind the front lines.

American Pickers - Civil War Finds

American Pickers – Hey everyone I just got off the phone with the rep from American pickers. They had sent an request to find people and items (Civil War related for the show). This is legitimate and also not a normal show. Fair market value will be paid for items and those items purchased will go in “display” not hidden away in a museum chosen by the history channel. They are looking for individuals not dealers. We have offered to have them on the show to explain more. If you are interested contact me at craiganderson@ourhistoryproject.com and I will get you in touch with the right people.

Ranger's Apprentice by John Flanagan - New Art

While searching today for anticipation of the next book by John Flanagan in the Ranger's Apprentice Series, I had to marvel at the new artwork for the books. This seems to be a turn that a lot of companies are turning to and making the books almost feel like trading cards. I do like most of the new artwork and still like some of the old artwork. Around the world where released there have been many covers to simple yet well done arrows to this new more dramatic painted scenes. I really did not like the photo covers of the early books, so this makes you wonder what is next. Tamora Pierce has done this with her Tortall Series and that made me bite the bullet and pick up 1 of the Alanna titles that I could not resist the artwork on.

The next question is- will you purchase a new set of these to get the new covers? I personally will purchase the new books in the series and even continue to order from overseas but I am not sure I will collect all the covers, but it sure makes me wish I had waited sometimes.

John Ledyard Chapter 5

Chapter 5 - The Life and Travels of John Ledyard by Jared Sparks

This week we pick up John’s story at Hawaii, just before Captain Cooks death and it ends with his return to England. There is a huge contrast to their first arrival in Hawaii and their second. I will reserve personal comments on this book until the end so not to shape any opinions. We may even do a live show and online chat for anyone who would like to participate when it is completed.

Note: There were several instances my curiosity peaked in this chapter on the known world and references to the names described. It is my intent to pull some screen shots as reference or to provide links. The David Rumsey Collection which is usual my primary source was down as I was compiling this so I went to my backup the University of Alabama (http://alabamamaps.ua.edu/historicalmaps/index.html) and referenced the map A New Map of the World with the Latest Discoveries, Boston: Thomas & Andrews, 1806; Engraved for Morse's Abridgement of Geography and London: Fisher, Son & Co., 1825.

David Sears - Such Men as These

Our History Project

Our Guest this week is David Sears. We discuss his new book “Men Such as These”.

In 1951, James Michener went to Korea to report on a little known aspect of America’s stalemated war: navy aviators. His research inspired novel about these pilots became an overnight bestseller and, perhaps, the most widely read book ever written about aerial combat.

Using Michener’s notes, author David Sears tracked down the actual pilots to tell their riveting, true-life stories. From the icy, windswept decks of aircraft carriers, they penetrated treacherous mountain terrain to strike heavily defended dams, bridges, and tunnels, where well entrenched Communist anti-aircraft gunners waited to shoot them down. Many of these men became air combat legends, and one, Neil Armstrong, the first astronaut to walk on the moon.

Such Men As These brims with action-packed accounts of combat and unforgettable portraits of the pilots whose skill and sacrifice made epic history.

Next Week

We will have on Tom Craughwell and we will discuss 2 of the 28 hardest Presidential demissions that faced this country. Folks, I have to tell you that I had a great time on this interview and Tom is someone will will most defiantly have back on. Don't miss this show.

Also

We have expanded our Membership, Sponsorship and Supporter section. Be sure to have a look at the new dollar amounts and what is offered. One huge change is that we are offering a group rate that will not go primarily to OHP but to other groups around the country to help with funding and projects on the local level.

Embracing History Magazine is being put together as we speak. We have gotten a lot of great stories so far and I have written a couple myself. The deadline for the first issue is September 1, 2010. So get those stories in!

Relic Roundup

We did get a response from the Texas Board of Education and at least one member has agreed to join us. The date of that is still to be determined but we will keep you up to date.

If you have not kept up with the news, Texas hit the National Press last month over its decisions to revamp the states curriculum and textbooks. I had read numerous articles and watch over 20 news shows and was surprised that almost none covered the story in full. It turned out to be all slants with no answers. We will have the story here LIVE. Stay Tuned!

OHP Radio presents John Ledyard - History Podcast

OHP Radio presents John Ledyard - an Audio Book Presentation

He was 10 feet tall, could run faster, walk further, swim deeper, climb higher than any man alive now or has ever been. He sailed the seven seas, explored unknown regions, walked across most of the world and met the famous and native alike. A pre-curser and idol to Lewis and Clark, a native of Connecticut and probably the most fearless explorer of all time - John Ledyard.

In the next couple of weeks we will explore John Ledyard through an 1828 book by Jared Sparks. The book is biographical sketch on John Ledyard drawing from his journals and letters. This is a one and only production of its kind, brought to you by Our History Project Productions

This episode:

The Preface and Chapter One: We learn about John beginnings, his home and family. We also look in to the spirit of knowledge, comedy, and bizarre acts that made this man who he was and where he started. This is a character I have wanted to something on and when I found a copy of the book I could not resist. I am no professional reader by any means, but I wanted to try something new here at OHP a chance for you to learn along with me. What you hear, is as far as I go in any given week. Leaving the week to google the people that surrounds John and to explore his life as I go.

Glenn Harbour - The Pig War

Our History Project is proud to bring you yet another piece of lost history. Glenn Harbour joins us today to talk about the forgotten and little known: ”Pig War”. An action, which almost caused an international incident at the beginning of an uncertain time just prior to the outbreak of the War Between the States (1859). This was an interesting story and the theories, what if’s and conspiracies could have really ran rampant on this one. I think that is one reason that makes this fun. King Philip's War - Classroom Edition

The King Philip’s War is the Bloodiest War per capita ever fought on American Soil. It is also one of the most overlooked events in our history. It is left out of text books, left out of our teaching and just like the tribes that were exterminated…wiped from our memory. - Not anymore.

OHPRadio - Harlow Unger - James Monroe -The last founding father

Our History Project interviews world renowned author Harlow Giles Unger about his latest book "The Last Founding Father" which is a story and study of James Monroe. Monroe was the 2nd most popular President of all time, but is usually overlooked in history.

In this powerful new biography award-winning author Harlow Giles Unger reveals the epic story of James Monroe-the last of America’s Founding Fathers, who transformed a small fragile nation beset by enemies into a glorious and powerful empire stretching “from sea to shining sea.”

This was a great story you don't want to miss. This interview is filled with topic of history that as rarely been explored. Guaranteed an hour that will fly by.

This is also a show to burn to a disk and hand to an educator, don't rely on go to this site and listen - hand it to them. This is a great extra credit show that will give substance to our founding and a man that is little explored in history.

SGT. Herculando Dias - "The U.S. Army’s First, Last and Only All-Black Rangers”

Our History Project

SGT. Herculando Dias - "The U.S. Army’s First, Last and Only All-Black Rangers”

We are interviewing Herculano Dias of the 2nd Company Airborne Rangers (Korea). Former Sgt. Dias was a part of the elite and only all black Ranger Divisions in the History of the United States. This interview covers a book by Edward L. Posey entitled “The U.S. Army’s First, Last and Only All-Black Rangers”. This interview shows an in-depth look into not only the racial strife of the 1950’s but also explores the narrow mindset of racial equality of the time. Further, it explores the war from a firsthand account while bringing to light the accomplishments of our black forces and the everyday struggles and bravery they experienced.

"The U.S. Army's First, Last and Only All Black Rangers by Edward Posey
This is a book for every shelf either at home or in the classroom. Korea was a forgotten war and in that forgetting a lot of men were forgotten too. This is a great read that I whole heartedly recommend." - Craig Anderson

On a personal note: We are proud to announce that Cassie has had her baby. We are hoping that she will join us Monday Night at 10PM to fill us all in on the new addition.

Every Monday night at 10PM we host a talk show called "The Relic Roundup". Hosted by Craig of OHP, Butch Holcombe of American Digger and Ian Conway of Research and Recovery. The title may frighten some but the show is really about learning, preserving and collecting America's past.

Sometimes we make our own topics like restaurants, movies, cars, clothes, headphones music and the list just keeps going on and on. So don't think it is only for those who metal detect.

You can call in to 678-369-7943 or skype in to wesley.c.anderson during the show.

This Monday's Guest

We will be having a guest from Kellyco, the Metal Detecting Superstore for at least part of the show. So, if you ever wanted to get a detector, upgrade, try a hand at prospecting or any other type of treasure hunting tonight is the night to call in with your questions. Again, the numbers are 678-369-7943 or skype: wesley.c.anderson.

Tell Us A Story

This week the show is not only for the history lover, metal detectorist or collectors but also for those aspiring to get into print. That’s right- Do you write? Do you want to? Or better yet - should you?

In this episode the Publisher of American Digger Magazine and Author of several books tells us what we should know about submissions, content and the do’s and don’ts of the writing industry. In essence this is not only what he looks for but every print publication looks for. This is one of those shows that is for any and everyone so pass it around.

It also brings up again the question: Should you write? I’m at fault here as well. I spend a lot of time researching but not a lot of time writing, but think about this – What are you finding in the field? Who was there? Why are you looking for this stuff in the first place? And the questions go on and on. Let us preserve this history with a little story.

The Elementary Common Sense of Thomas Paine - Mark Wilensky

We are joined today by Mark Wilensky for a show and a book that will be read and heard in many classrooms over the years. Mark breaks down the writing of Thomas Paine into clear, concise and easy to follow language that is not only full of information on the times and the writing itself but has been a staple for elementary, middle, high schools and colleges. Also, this book is interactive and is enhanced by his companion website to the book www.newcommonsensebook.com.
