Solar Shield Sun Glasses Review

When I first found these glasses I like the way they fit over my regular pair of prescription glasses. They did not look at all like the oversized goggles that just make you look plain weird. I bought a pair to try out and they fit comfortable, looked good (at least my teenager did not run from embarrassment) at being seen with me, which generally means that they are ok.

The problem is that these glasses are a piece of crap and the company does not care. Every one of the 4 pair I have bought, broke on the stem, "same place" and either right or left sides (2 each). I have cannibalized the pairs that I had purchased to finish out my inventory I have. Clearly there is a problem.

I have contacted the company to advise them of the issue and they will gladly look at them if I sent them in and include another $6 for shipping. "What?" What that told me is that we do not care if you already spent $20 a pair on these, and "maybe" we "may" replace them if we determine we should. There are a lot of ifs there and no guarantees. I can see 1 breaking, 2 in the same spot - possible, 3 pretty co-incidental (as the Duke would put it), 4 - there is something wrong in mudville.

So, if you are looking at these at the store, run, run fast. Do not waste your money. I handled my last 3 with extra kitten gloves and only made it about 6 weeks with any of them.

Bottom line don't do it, find a quality pair with a company who will back their product up.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans are for anyone?

We are pleased to announce the near completion of one of our latest outreach projects. Our History Project has been working with The Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) Camp 108; a local SCV Camp located locally here in McDonough, GA; to fashion and website design, to encourage members, volunteers and the community to become involved with local historical education, preservation and community projects. SCV Camp 108 hosts monthly meetings on the fourth (4^th) Monday of each month at the Nash Farm Battlefield Museum complete with a special topic or presenter on a wide verity of historical topics at each one. The meetings are open to the public and attendance is encouraged.

Our History Project, Inc.; a national non-profit based organization; chose to work with SCV camp 108 because of their volunteerism, open involvement, passion for history and open platform presented by its members. They have worked hard to bring other groups to Henry County including Sons of Union Veterans (SUV) and are helping to form a local chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR).

Collectively and personally the SCV Camp 108 had well over 2000 community service volunteer hours in 2010 including; multiple Education Days’ for local schools. This does not count its members supporting their Churches, Charities, community businesses, local needs and projects. They have shown and proven their dedication to preserving our nation’s past through works, writings and media presentations.

“I was so impressed by what these guys are doing, I joined myself.”, said Craig Anderson, the Executive Director of Our History Project.

Blackveil by Kristen Britian - "The story is lost in the dark wood"

I do not know how many of you, like me have waited for the next thrilling episode, chapter and book of this wonderful story. As Feb. 2011 came 'round, I was excited because it was finally being released! I got it, but I think the author lost this story in Blackveil.

After 300 pages and 2 other books (read in the mean time just to keep my sanity), I have yet to find more than 2 scenes that held my attention. This wonderful, exciting story has turned to a romance novel. A romance novel that hardly even follows the main character at that. I keep waiting, and waiting. Flipping ahead just to see what the future holds, and sadly, it appears not much.

We are used to long waits from the Kristen Britian, 4-7 years at a shot. This as been acceptable to me because the final result was stellar, though most every time I had to read the other because I had forgotten what it was about. This one completely missed the mark with no turn for the better in the near future. I'll muddle thru and offer a final review, soon. If anyone else is sharing my misery let me know.

I must start this review by saying I have never in my life, borrowed, checked out, read, listened or reviewed a book on music or musical artist(s). It is just not a subject that interested me. I was looking over Savas Beatie’s offering for 2011 and for some reason this book stood out to me, almost calling me. I went back to the page several times before ordering my copy.

“Hey Buddy” is Not a Biography on Buddy Holly. It IS a wonderful and magical journey to find Buddy Holly – The man, the legend and the music. We learn quickly that the author shared my view on music history; knowing a little but not really interested until that one night changed his life forever.

After being dragged to an event called the “Winter Dance Party” performed by John Mueller who impersonates Buddy, Gary W. Moore was transfixed, mesmerized and struck to the core. What this entire book revolves around his the quest to find the music.
Gary W. Moore book “Hey Buddy” is a Masterpiece. He takes us on the journey with him. We are there from the first moment that these emotions hit to the final visit to the crash site. You will find yourself researching, looking, listening and reading to what he did. Seriously, do not be surprised if you find yourself on the computer until 2-3AM.

Even though this book is a personal journey for Gary; his writing, his research; it is strangely perceived at the end as personal journey for you the reader. The reason I am stating this as a Masterpiece is that although this is his journey. I found myself not really seeing him that much in the book. I was in his skin, in his shoes and experiencing this journey for myself. It was my story!

Along this epic ride we take with us a host of characters; some serious, some funny, some sad and some angry. All of them culminate to bring this story to life. “Hey Buddy” will be one of your all-time favorites as it is now for me. This is a book and a journey you will have to experience for yourself and I promise you will not be disappointed.

“Hey Buddy” is for the hardcore Holly Fans and for those who have just heard about him. You will be blown away by what you hear and what you learn about Holly. From the crash investigations, talking to the Dwyers’ and just exploring a decade of music you thought you knew. This one is a keeper.

White Oak Civil War Museum

Every time we bring up The White Oak Civil War Museum on the Relic Roundup it is always: “You got to go!”, “It’s unbelievable!”, or a number of other comments but always ending with an exclamation mark. White Oak Museum houses an extensive collection of Civil War artifacts, representing both Union and Confederate troops. Most items were discarded or lost by troops camping or fighting in the Stafford County and Fredericksburg areas. Displays will amaze the novice as well as the serious Civil War Buff - including replicas of soldier huts that were used as temporary housing during the winter months. Many Civil War soldiers died of wounds and disease. To give proper remembrance to these brave soldiers, White Oak Museum exhibits both military and personal items to honor the soliders, from private to general, who suffered both in battle and behind the front lines.

Ranger's Apprentice by John Flanagan - New Art

While searching today for anticipation of the next book by John Flanagan in the Ranger's Apprentice Series, I had to marvel at the new artwork for the books. This seems to be a turn that a lot of companies are turning to and making the books almost feel like trading cards. I do like most of the new artwork and still like some of the old artwork. Around the world where released there have been many covers to simple yet well done arrows to this new more dramatic painted scenes. I really did not like the photo covers of the early books, so this makes you wonder what is next. Tamora Pierce has done this with her Tortall Series and that made me bite the bullet and pick up 1 of the Alanna titles that I could not resist the artwork on.

The next question is- will you purchase a new set of these to get the new covers? I personally will purchase the new books in the series and even continue to order from overseas but I am not sure I will collect all the covers, but it sure makes me wish I had waited sometimes.

This week we pick up John’s story at Hawaii, just before Captain Cooks death and it ends with his return to England. There is a huge contrast to their first arrival in Hawaii and their second. I will reserve personal comments on this book until the end so not to shape any opinions. We may even do a live show and online chat for anyone who would like to participate when it is completed.

Note: There were several instances my curiosity peaked in this chapter on the known world and references to the names described. It is my intent to pull some screen shots as reference or to provide links. The David Rumsey Collection which is usual my primary source was down as I was compiling this so I went to my backup the University of Alabama (http://alabamamaps.ua.edu/historicalmaps/index.html) and referenced the map A New Map of the World with the Latest Discoveries, Boston: Thomas & Andrews, 1806; Engraved for Morse's Abridgement of Geography and London: Fisher, Son & Co., 1825.

Our Guest this week is David Sears. We discuss his new book “Men Such as These”.

In 1951, James Michener went to Korea to report on a little known aspect of America’s stalemated war: navy aviators. His research inspired novel about these pilots became an overnight bestseller and, perhaps, the most widely read book ever written about aerial combat.

Using Michener’s notes, author David Sears tracked down the actual pilots to tell their riveting, true-life stories. From the icy, windswept decks of aircraft carriers, they penetrated treacherous mountain terrain to strike heavily defended dams, bridges, and tunnels, where well entrenched Communist anti-aircraft gunners waited to shoot them down. Many of these men became air combat legends, and one, Neil Armstrong, the first astronaut to walk on the moon.

Such Men As These brims with action-packed accounts of combat and unforgettable portraits of the pilots whose skill and sacrifice made epic history.

I had read numerous articles and watch over 20 news shows and was surprised that almost none covered the story in full. It turned out to be all slants with no answers. John Ledyard: Chapter 2 &3

We are reading the 1828 biography of The Life and Travels of John Ledyard. This is the first attempt at a production of this by OHP and it is meant to be a study and as close to a firsthand account of this lost to history legendary traveler. In the Preface and Chapter one we met his family and learned of his college life. Now he has moved on to find family in the old country and set sails with Captain Cook on his last voyage. While I am not a professional reader by any means I hope you are enjoying the story. My thoughts are after 1 more week we will move back to the interviews that have taken us so far and explore more history and stories from across the country. We will finish the book as I can not stand a project left undone, however it will be interspersed though out the year.

Speaking of which, we are pleased to announce that we will be starting the next phase in Our History Project in earnest. We have been meeting with teachers at Eastlake Elementary School in McDonough, GA to start a curriculum based program that will enhance the State and National Standards. This development when completed will be available to all the schools nationwide. We will be developing not only resources that will be availed in the classroom but hands on activities as well.

We will be sponsoring a story time once a week starting in January and as we move forward we will need volunteers nationwide as we expand this project. So if you are a part of an historic organization consider signing up your group to spread the word and the stories of our America.

Our History Project Board Meeting and the Future

I have plenty of shows to put up, however I wanted this week’s focus to on our board meeting held on Monday, November 9th, 2009. I invite you to listen, give input and offer guidance as we go into this next year. We have accomplished so much in the short time we have been here and where we go from here either has a finite stopping point or will be an unbelievable adventure.

Cassie and I personally are going to step back this week to reflect on the past seven months and get a game plan together for the next physical year which is coming on fast. We have hit a home run on the entertainment side with our shows. That we can see from our numbers and even on 1000mikes.com in just being there 4 short weeks we now hold #3 in the top shows on that site. That says a lot. We have a lot of listeners, made some great friends and for that we are successful.

The other side is the financial part and the funds that will take us to that next level and further our vision and enhance our mission. On that we have had almost no support at all. A few great people have came forward and for that I am grateful, your funds, time resources and gifts have gone to a great cause and every penny was pinched to make it go that much further. Thank you.

Is this project going away? No. There will be some changes coming with a focus on what and how we can remain funded to further our mission and vision. For that I am excited because what it says is that we have put together a winning product and idea. It is like now is the time to get started.

Again, I invite you to listen, give feedback and support. Everyone has heard the JFK speech “Ask not what your country can do for you …”, but few remember the 6th paragraph in that same speech “..United there is little we cannot do in a host of cooperative ventures. Divided there is little we can do - for we dare not meet a powerful challenge at odds or split asunder.”

We are at a crossroads and we want to refocus and put forth our best. Anything less would be an insult to us and to you. It is our contention to focus our time, energy, talents and funds where we can do the most good as it relates to our non-profit venture.

We want your input, that’s why we did this as a non-profit in the first place. The history is ours - The memory is ours - and The future is ours.

OHP Radio In The Dirt Halloween Special

Today Butch brings us some strange but true stories from the field. A hair-raising good time will be had by all, guaranteed.

A correction - we were talking in the show on the base minimum that OHP needs to operate I wrongly said $3000 and that would be correct with everything combined (software and equipment) doing the very least that we could do. The correct figure for hosting, websites bandwidth and storage is $1650 yearly just to maintain the space. As you can see this leaves no room for growth, projects or general operating expenses (lights, phone, rent etc.). As you can see we need your help to keep this project going. Any amount will be helpful and you can donate or sign up for a membership, supporter or sponsor on our website or just contact me craiganderson@ourhistoryproject.com .

Our Grant writing will start soon so if you have experience in this process and could either volunteer to write or to review Grants that we write, please let us know. In November we will be on the 50 State National Registry which is required by most Grants.

So, keep your eyes and ears open for us on historical or art related grants.

OHP Radio - Finding the Cache

It was reported recently that a number of Canon Shells were found in the Southeaster U.S.. Some reports say that it was 40 while others say it was over 70. Either way it had to be a great historical find. While reports are still sketchy at this point is is believed that some if not all shells are to be donated to a museum, which is great because now everyone will have a chance to share in our history.

OK, now for the show. In light of this find, Butch and I put together a show which highlights more caches, meaning more than one item of the same type. Bullets, buttons, coin and maybe some gold. Come join us for the fun.

Today on Our History Project our guest will be Henry Kurtz, who is the grandson of the late Historian Wilbur Kurtz. We discuss his book “The Runaway Train” which is about Andrews Raid or the commonly referred to name Great Locomotive Chase. However you say it, it is a great story in our history. What makes this book unique in its own rights is that Wilbur Kurtz married into the Fuller Family. Captain Fuller was a part of this chase and historic event. Being the Historian that Wilbur Kurtz was all the details and accounts was gotten first hand and these stories have been passed down through the family. Through Wilbur’s interviews, notes, manuscripts, writings and research this is a close to hearing the story firsthand.

Hello everyone! I hope all is well with you. My family just got back from visiting that Mouse down in Florida and I am almost ready to get back at it. I think I'll need two weeks to catch up just on rest.

First I want to apologize to everyone for no show posting on Wednesday of this week. Due to Mother Nature and Mr. Newton I just could not make it happen. Everything was in place and tested before we left, however when "Showtime" came, thunderstorms and the theory that what can go wrong- did prevented it from happening as planned.

What I put together this week is the rest of the NGRHA Relic Show Audio. Yes, I said “Herbs.” Ever thought of that?

Well, I didn’t either until I met Janet. It soon hit me of course there where herbs. It was the medicine of the day. Very few got to go to the Doctor, there weren’t any around. Herbs played a huge role for our early settlers. They were not used only as medicine, they were used in everyday life as well such as around the house cleaning, cooking and in the field.

This was a fascinating interview that I hope you will enjoy too.

OHP Radio - Digging at the Museum!

If you think what is in the yards and fields where you hunt are great finds, it doesn’t compare with what you can dig up at your local museum. No, we are not condoning taking a shovel or a detector and you do have to go during the day, but we are saying get off the couch and out the door. Go visit!

I bet there are a lot of folks who have not explored you local flavor of history. I’m no exception in this either. I went for years traveling the country and seeing all I could see and never looking around at what is here in front of me. Yes, I hit the biggies but not the smaller places. What I found is I missed a lot and you would be surprised at what can be found if you just take the time to look.

Folks, these are hard times and a lot of these local, county or regional historic places are closing- Maybe for a day, maybe two or maybe forever. Don’t let our history disappear lets go visit.

This week was a great one, a tiring one. It was one where everything did not work out as planned on Saturday because for whatever reason the first part of the morning did not record. We missed a great in the dirt segment and some interviews with Mark Hudson, Arthur Cook and Bill Yarborough. The good part is that Butch and was joined by Cassie and we did another one on Sunday, which is what you will here today and I know all of the above mentioned to get their stories again.

It was a great show and I really had a blast. Thanks to all that came out especially Mark and his crew from Southeast Treasure Hunters that came from Alabama. It was a pleasure to meet everyone and we hope to do it again soon.

RCA .VOC File Problems Fixed

To all of you out there who are having a problem with this file I have found 2 things that work. One every easy and one not so but works. The easy go to RCA.com and to the voice recorder page http://www.rcaaudiovideo.com/categories.aspx?product=368&post=49. Mine was listed with a photo so it made it easy and it offered a link to download the vioce manager software.

If yours is not go to support and then to downloads.

The good, it will see and play the file while hooked up by USB cable (only) you can right click and export it to a .WAV file or and .EXE file from here. The bad part is that it brings it in lower sounding than what was orginally recorded.

The other way is to play the file with the RCA vioce software and re-record it using an audio capture program. You can get them as freeware or watch Giveawayoftheday.com as they usually offer one at least once a month. The Bad it is a 1 to 1 recording but it will offer better, louder sound quality that will match the original. I use Hi-Q Recorder, it has a timer so I can set it and leave for long ones that matter. They have a free version and it is very good software. The difference is that with the free version you can only go to 96 on the bitrate and no timer record. For most shows I use 192 edit it and then back down to 48 because of size.

Hope this helps, I have been everywhere on the net this past weeks and have been aggrivated to no end, as there was no easy way to find how to convert these files. While there were alot of opinions and points to doing it, nothing worked. I was trying to convert it for a friend who sent me the file. Well, RCA is crazy enough that you actually have to plug the device in the computer before you can do anything with it. The file by itself won't work. Did I say crazy, sorry I meant Stupid.

Our History Project 4th of July

Today we look at the document that started it all – “The Declaration of Independence”. This may not be an exciting show folks but it is one that will spell out the reasons why or founding fathers wrote it and what impact it made, not only for us a new independent country but for the rest of the world as well.

In today’s society where we have people who do not know their Vice President, Secretary of State, their representatives in Washington or even their own local officials, and really there are a lot of these folks out there. When if ever have you read, looked at or listened to this historical document? Listen today and you will. As I said this is not the most upbeat show we have had but I think it is important to hear. I left the show tunes background on for the entire show and do not know if it helps or is a distraction. Let me know and I can change it (Yes, I’m asking for an opinion, I can redo it.)

The show is only 18 minutes this week so give it a listen and think about those Founding Fathers who put their life on the line to sign it.

Next week Cassie talks to one of Georgia’s First Ladies Betty Vandiver who was the wife of Ernest Vandiver from 1959-1963 at a time when Civil Rights was an explosive issue for our Country and the South.

This past weekend I went on vacation and got to explore the Battlefields of Kings Mountain and Cowpens and get back to the part of history that I am not so well versed in. Our History Project – Helen Denton – A Life of Service

I had the honor of interviewing Mrs. Helen Denton this week. Folks, this is truly a remarkable woman and you will undoubtedly find her life as interesting as I did. Just some highlights: She typed the D-day Order’s for June 6th, 1944 - She cut a rug with Lawrence Welk - She stopped a moving train –She meet the Queen and much, much more. In fact there is way too much to even to begin to list.

She is one of Georgia’s most interviewed people, but I think we got a story that was different and inspiring. I have included the excellent “GA PBS TV” interview that you can watch as well. I suggest that you take our interview with you on the road and watch the video at home. Both interviews will give you the complete picture of this legend of service. This is great story of service, community, sadness, hope and sharing.

Our History Project – “In the Dirt with American Digger” Wednesday

Our new format is going to put the “In the Dirt with American Digger” segment to be released on Wednesdays. This is a popular part of our program and well; I have a great time with Butch. There are many times when we ramble about the important part of relic and treasure hunting and times we just spend having a good time. This new format will allow time to be spent on the things that matter (information and how to’s) without the small time constraint we were on.

Most segments will still be 15-20 minutes in length but it will give us the additional time when needed, to go longer.

Enough of the Explanation! On with the Show!

This week we learn about “Bottle Hunting”! What it is, how to do it, what to look for, what tools to bring and the do-s and don’t-s.

Our History Project – June 6th, 1944

This week we celibrate the 65th Anniversary of the Invasion of Normandy (D-Day) and remember those who were there and those who have fallen there.

Our guest this week is Colonel Spencer Wurst, who made the jump that faithful day with the 82nd Airborne. He was part of Company F of the 505 Parachute Infantry Regiment. He made three of the four combat jumps, dropping into Italy, Normandy and Holland.
